The Life and Legacy of Miuccia Prada

Miuccia Prada is an Italian fashion designer and head of the Prada fashion house. Born into one of Italy’s most respected fashion families, Miuccia had no initial interest in joining the family business. She set out on the path of politics and business, attending University for years. She had a change of heart upon graduating and went on to study the art of Miming for a further five years. It was only after this that she changed her mind and joined forces with her mother Luisa, who was head of the company in the 1970s. She joined her family’s business in 1970 as a manager of two stores. In 1978 she had risen to take over from her mother as head of the brand. She entered into a partnership with businessman Patrizio Bertelli and subsequently pulled a struggling Prada from its knees, turning it back into a premium label. Today, she continues to run Prada as well as offshoot label Miu Miu.

The Prada Bag: A History of Innovation

Many things about the Prada brand have changed since 1913, but one thing that has remained a constant is their stunning collections of fine bags. Prada initially bought and resold travel bags from England, and for decades they did reasonably well in their home of Italy building up a strong, loyal customer base. However, the brand was stagnant; Prada seemingly had exhausted its ability to grow and expand, until Miuccia Prada took over in 1978. She set to work designing a revolutionary line of Prada backpacks and totes, a collection that would change the destiny of the Prada label. This initial line would go on to be Miuccia’s first success at the head of the brand. 1985 saw the release of the now-iconic Prada handbag, the brand’s first commercial it-bag. As time passed the house immersed itself in fine fashion, producing line after line of coveted Prada shoulder bags, dresses, shoes and an extensive array of other items. Today, Prada bags are one of the world’s most wanted items - a bag from Prada is seen as a symbol of the woman you are.
