The Prolific Pradas
Prada was founded in 1913 by Mario Prada and his brother Martino as a leather goods shop. Wary of women in business, Mario refused to let any female members of the Prada family have a hand in running the brand. This would backfire on him however; his son wanted no part in the business, and thus it passed to his daughter Luisa who rand Prada for twenty years. In 1978, Mario’s granddaughter Miuccia took over. Miuccia is the mastermind behind the reinvention of Prada as a luxury ready-to-wear label, and is essentially responsible for Prada’s status as a style icon.
The Prada Renaissance
The reinvention of Prada began in 1978, when Miuccia Prada stepped into her ongoing role as head designer. For the next two decades, Miuccia worked tirelessly to reinvent Prada as a status symbol, beginning with a line of bags in 1979. The brand began only producing a limited amount of items in each collection, to create an ongoing demand and search for the “exclusive” pieces. In 1989, the first ready-to-wear collection of Prada clothing made its debut, containing lines of coveted Prada dresses, skirts and other items. The 90s saw the brand finally breaking icon status, as Prada became the most anticipated and revered brand in ready-to-wear fashion. Today, Prada maintains over 40 locations worldwide, and as of 2016 became available through the online retailer Net-A-Porter.

The brand is under the capable and crafty hands of Miuccia Prada since 1978, and her innovative methods of design have made Prada’s aesthetic one to be reckoned with. Prada searches for unusual sources of inspiration when creating collections, taking cues from art, cinema and architecture when designing. Driven, daring ladies with a flair for the dramatic will definitely see themselves reflected in a Prada design - a Prada skirt or top is an essential add to their wardrobes.
