The King of Contemporary Couture
Olivier Theyskens was born in Brussels in January 1977. He studied fashion design in a prestigious Arts school in Belgium, but dropped out in 1997 to begin his own eponymous label of Olivier Theyskens clothing. He designed a collection and began submitting pieces to a Belgian group show, Arianne Phillips, a stylist, laid eyes on his work and dressed popstar Madonna in one of his dresses; this was to be his first glimpse at future fashion stardom. Theyskens became creative director of the brand Rochas in 2002, and then artistic director of Nina Ricci in 2006. His collections for both brands were met with universal critical acclaim. In 2010, he joined Theory to create a capsule collection, Theyskens’ Theory. Today he continues to design for his eponymous label which he relaunched in 2016.
The History of Olivier Theyskens
Olivier Theyskens clothing came into being in 1997. Theyskens dropped out of École Nationale Supérieure des Arts Visuels de la Cambre where he was studying fashion design to start his own label. He submitted pieces from the brand’s first collection titled “Gloomy Trips” to a Belgian group exhibition. Madonna ended up wearing an [Olivier Theyskens dress](/en/olivier-theyskens/dresses from this collection to the 1998 Academy Awards ceremony. The brand got its first taste of success. The full collection was presented in Paris the same year and by the turn of the millennium Olivier Theyskens was lauded as one of the most important brands in fashion at the time. Over the next fifteen years, the brand took a backseat as founder Theyskens focused on other pursuits, such as his stint as creative director of Theory. However, in 2016 he announced that the label would be making a much-anticipated comeback.
Opulence For The Modern Woman
Olivier Theyskens can never be accused of skimping on luxury; from day one every collection has oozed opulence, grace and grandeur. His first collection was a gothic masterpiece - a deconstructed line of 18th century clothing. He has held onto that splendour ever since, creating gowns that are always utterly runway-worthy. An Olivier Theyskens dress is always a statement of magnificence, and should only be reserved for the most stylish of women. Celebrity fans of the brand include Emma Watson, Nicole Kidman and Cate Blanchett.
