Marc Jacobs – the designer
At the prestigious Parsons School of Design Marc Jacobs, who was born in 1960, graduates with honours in 1984. Numerous other awards such as the Perry Ellis Golden Timbre Award follow soon. Together with his business partner Robert Duffy Marc Jacobs launches the first collection under his own name Marc Jacobs in 1986. He manages to combine the beautiful with the bizarre. “I always find beauty in things that are odd and imperfect - they are much more interesting.”– A typical quote of the exceptional talent.
Marc Jacobs’ signature feature
In 1989 Marc Jacobs becomes the chief designer of Perry Ellis. Already at that time he demonstrates his abilities and his unique intuition for vibrant colours; a feature that is always noticeable in his collections. In 1993 he starts working under his own name Marc Jacobs again before then being hired as creative director at Louis Vuitton.
Marc Jacobs - worldwide expansion of the label
Today Marc Jacobs is represented in more than 60 own shops worldwide. Besides the women’s collection the designer also offers a Marc Jacobs men’s and kids’ collection, six diverse Marc Jacobs fragrances, two Marc Jacobs sunglass-collections and the watch collection. The sub-line Marc by Marc Jacobs is launched in 2001.
The Marc Jacobs style
In his collection the designer reinvents himself over and over again – and still manages to stay true to his unique style. The combination of seemingly contradicting elements creates unique, refracted beauty. Marc Jacobs works with soft materials as angora, cashmere and mohair with clear and straight cuts. The Marc by Marc Jacobs collections, however, are characterized rather by playful, soft and girly elements – always in combination with a touch of vintage.
