A story of success – the Jimmy Choo shoes

Jimmy Choo is born in Malaysia in 1961 and grows up in a family of shoemakers. In order to complete this prior knowledge he stats a triennial study at that Cordwainers Technical College in London and next to the studies works in a shoe fabric. In 1983 he graduates and starts working in a shoes manufacturing – the implementation of his own shoes designs follows.

The career of Jimmy Choo

In 1986 Jimmy Choo opens his first own atelier where he designs a Couture shoe line. Soon he presents his first collections and acquires immediate recognition and vogue. Also the British Vogue takes notice and prints a report about the designer and his same-named shoe collections. This article is the starting point for the hype around his shoes. Also celebrities quickly become fans of his works.

The development of the label Jimmy Choo

In this context the later president and co-founder of the worldwide concern Tamara Mellon approaches him in 1996 in order to re-launch a ready-to-wear collection. Choo founds the Jimmy Choo Ltd. And together the two open the first Jimmy Choo boutique in the Motcomb Street in London with immediate, international fame.

In 2001 the label merges with “Equinox Luxury” – from that moment on also other hand-made Couture shoes can wear the name Jimmy Choo and 26 new boutiques are opened. In 2003 Choo acquires his title as “Officer of the Order of the British Empire”. In 2009 the brand co-operates with the Swedish house H&M. Since 2011 Jimmy Choo belongs to the Labelux Group GmbH.
