Jill Stuart: Design Prodigy
Jill Stuart is an American fashion designer best known for her work with her eponymous label Jill Stuart. A child prodigy in the world of fashion design, Stuart had sold her first collection of self-designed bags and jewellery to retailer Bloomingdale’s at the tender age of 15. In 1988 she opened her first store, while still selling lines of accessories to upscale stores such as Marcus Neiman. It wasn’t until 1993 that she launched her own label, Jill Stuart clothes. By the end of 1995, her designs had featured in one of the biggest movies of the decade - Clueless. Clueless placed her on the international stage, and she continued to rise through the ranks of designers unobstructed. Today she lives in SoHo, New York and continues to design for her label alongside her daughter.
From Clueless To Clued-In
Jill Stuart was launched in 1993 as a provider of edgy, interesting fashion for young women. The brand was catapulted into the limelight following the release of the 1995 movie Clueless, and by the end of the decade had opened up stores in Japan and South Korea as well as having 70 other points of sale across the US. Bergdorf Goodman and other top retailers couldn’t get enough of Jill Stuart dresses and bags, continuing to stock the brand right up to the present day. The brand has expanded out from only clothing, and now provides Jill Stuart bags, shoes and fragrances for women.
The first designs Jill Stuart ever sold to Bloomingdale’s consisted of chokers made from leather and silver, and suede hobo bags. This quirky-cool aesthetic has stuck with the brand ever since, and each and every line is a delightful display of femininity and flawlessness. The brand takes a laid-back approach to fashion, creating pieces that could belong on the streets of New York or at an upscale event. For any girls that just want to have fun, a Jill Stuart design is the stuff dreams are made of. Celebrity fans of the brand include Whitney Port, Anne Hathaway and Annalynne McCord.
