The Illustrious Life of Karl Lagerfeld

Karl Lagerfeld is a German fashion designer, artist and photographer who has worked for a number of famous houses and been involved in countless artistic collaborations. Lagerfeld studied drawing and history before winning a design competition which led to a job with Pierre Balmain. He spent three years there before moving on to Jean Patou where he designed for their haute couture collections. After launching his own label, he began to gain traction, becoming known for his provocative and sometimes shocking style. He favoured short skirts and plunging necklines, styles that were almost frowned upon in the 1960s. Nonetheless, he made a name for himself and began designing for the house of Chloé, followed by a turn at Fendi and eventually landing the role of creative director for Chanel. Today he continues to design for Chanel, bringing his unique sense of style to the forefront each season with collections of Chanel sunglasses, tops, dresses and other items.

From Cruel Couture to Relaxed Ready-To-Wear

Chanel’s role in 20th century fashion is a pivotal one. The house arrived during a time when style was in serious need of a shake-up. The rigid, unrelenting and sometimes cruel look that was so popular in the 1920s did not sit well with Coco Chanel. She didn’t believe women’s fashion should be so unforgiving. Using relaxed form, soft materials and elegant design, Coco set about creating clothing for women that worked with them rather than restricted them. She worked primarily with traditionally male colours - greys, navys and later on blacks - to create a boldness not usually associated with women’s clothing. Her use of relaxed fabrics like tricot and jersey were suited to her casual style and won her a lot of positive attention. Because of Coco’s determination to do her own thing, the style of the century did a complete u-turn in her favour. Chanel has set a precedent of elegance without sacrificing comfort, and continues to do so almost one hundred years on.
