How it started

Thomas Burberry was born in 1835 and at the young age of 21, he founded the now globally renowned fashion house Burberry. Initially, the brand specialized in outdoor clothing but Thomas discovered an innovative fabric in 1878 that weatherproof yet breathable, immediately realizing that this fabric would be used as revolutionary rainwear. At the time, rainwear had been rather heavy and uncomfortable so this was a significant breakthrough for the brand. In 1891, the prestigious brand transferred to larger premises in London Haymarket, designed by the architect Walter Cave. The newly discovered fabric, gabardine, was used to design quality jackets and were fastened with a belt. The trench coat itself was designed to assist the needs of the military service. Burberry became the best choice for most explorers thanks to its unique and convenient designs. The quality and protective fabric used make the clothes very appropriate for setting off in inhospitable conditions.

Interesting facts

Burberry was unsurprisingly the official supplier for outerwear to the British Olympic women team that participated in the Olympic Games in Tokyo. In 1998, Mario Testino launched the first advertising campaign for Burberry hiring the British model Kate Moss. This marked the beginning of a longstanding relationship between Moss and the brand. The Burberry Foundation was launched in 2008 and is a philanthropic organization dedicated to helping young people realize their dreams. 1% of the prestigious group’s profits are donated to charity. Additionally, Queen Elizabeth II grants Burberry a Royal Warrant as Weatherproofer. In 1955, Burberry was taken over by the UK retail group Great Universal Stores (GUS) and later on in 2010, the same established a collaboration with Burberry Acoustic which is a digital platform for emerging British musical talents.
