Christian Louboutin - Birth of an iconic shoe

The designer is born in 1963 in Paris and grows up in his family in the city’s working-class neighbourhood. At the age of 12 Louboutin sees a sign in the Parisian “Musée des Arts Océaniens” showing a crossed out stiletto. It is supposed to keep the female visitors from destroying the floor with their heels. Louboutin is fascinated by the shape of the crossed out heel – his passion for high heels comes to life.

From dance shoes to provocative high heels: The development of Louboutin's

From now on Louboutin visits the vaudevilles, starts working there and watches the mannequins dancing. He particularly notices how the women pay attention to their bodies, explicitly to their legs. Louboutin’s passion is pushed forward. From this time on he devotes himself to the shoes of the dancers and examines how they need to be shaped in order not to pinch.

Christian Louboutin: A recognizable career

Soon Louboutin’s first own designs launch which celebrate immediate successes. In order to complete these further the designer starts his apprenticeships at Charles Jourdan, Chanel and Yves Saint Laurent. Afterwards he works for popular designers as Jean-Paul Gaultier, Givenchy and Lanvin. His first own shoe shop opens in 1992 in the Rue Jean-Jacques Rousseau in Paris. Besides the free coffee served to the customers the shop particularly comes to fame through the popular faces among the customers. The final breakthrough is achieved when the American company Neiman Marcus incorporates his shoes in their own assortment.

Distinctive feature: The birth of Louboutin's red sole

His most distinctive feature, the red sole, comes to existence coincidently: Louboutin, who regards one of his own designs as too dull, watches one of his employees varnishing her nails with red colour. This pictures serves as inspiration whereupon the designer decides to colour all soles red.
